Sia Mensah was raised as a Muslim by parents who converted to Islam under the overall guidance of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, a spiritual leader who led thousands of Black Americans from the Nation of Islam to Sunni Islam in the 1970s and 1980s. Though she enjoyed being a Muslim as a girl, there were a few doctrinal issues that did not align with her budding feminist consciousness. At 15, she came across evidence that led her to doubt the divine origins of the Qur’an, and she decided to apostasize in secret. She officially declared her apostasy to her parents the day before her 18th birthday.
In recent years, she has been a vocal participant in grassroots activism addressing antizionist bigotry, as well as initiatives supporting women’s sex based rights. She is pleased to join the Clarity Coalition alongside fellow ex-Muslims, Muslim reformers, Jews, Christians, and others who are committed to maintaining the separation between mosque and state in an age of encroaching political Islam.
