Statement on the San Diego Mosque Attack

The attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego is a horrific act of violence against worshippers and against the principles of religious liberty and pluralism that underpin a free society. CLARITy Coalition unequivocally condemns this attack and stands with those affected.

But attacks on religious institutions, whether targeting mosques, synagogues, churches, or temples, are rarely intended only to harm immediate victims. Their broader social function is often to deepen fear, intensify grievance, and fracture societies along religious and communal lines.

Extremists understand something dangerous: divided societies are easier to radicalize.

When places of worship become targets, the intended effect extends beyond terror. The goal is often to convince communities that pluralism and a free and open society are impossible, that neighbours are adversaries, and that identity must become a fortress. Fear becomes suspicion. Suspicion becomes tribalism. Tribalism becomes fertile ground for further extremism.

This cycle benefits those who seek polarization. It benefits those who recruit through grievance, mobilize through anger, and thrive where trust between communities breaks down.

The response to such attacks cannot be further fragmentation. Nor can it be selective outrage depending on the faith community targeted. Defending religious freedom and public safety requires moral consistency. Violence against any community of worship is an attack on the social fabric that allows diverse democracies to function.

Protecting pluralism means rejecting attempts to isolate communities into competing camps of victimhood, resentment, and fear. It means affirming that Americans of all faiths, and those without religious belief, share a common interest in resisting those who seek to divide society for ideological or extremist ends.

No one should fear entering a mosque, synagogue, church, temple, or any place of worship.

Those who attack religious communities seek not only to injure people, but to erode trust itself. We should refuse to allow them to succeed.

CLARITy Coalition is founded and, in fact, named for our central mission: “champions for liberty against the threat of Islamist tyranny”. We strongly believe that the only way to defeat Islamists and their theocratic ideology of political Islam is through the advocacy and protection of religious liberty, America’s first liberty, and free speech, and we will continue to advocate for that.
